A Night On The Town

January 9th, 2016 | Relationships |

After a long week at work quitting time was welcome. At home my two kids in bad moods because the plumbing was backed up. I’m divorced so the house problems are mine. Worse, the sitter couldn’t stay for the evening.

I called my friend who was supposed to take me out that night to cancel. She said she’d be arriving with a babysitter and to help me get ready to go have some fun.

An hour later she arrived. The babysitter was a young cousin with experience. Okay, one problem down. Next was getting ready. My friend had brought a dress she knew I’d look great in. I didn’t look great, I looked exhausted.

My friend knew what she was doing. She dragged a small suitcase into the house. It was loaded with cosmetics. She covered up the tired look like a professional wedding makeup artist Manchester. The results were amazing and so was our night on the town.

Healing Garden

November 12th, 2015 | Gardening |

Ever since her husband passed away, the big three-story house that Sally lived in seemed to get a little more lonely every day. Every carefully decorated room in it was a reminder of the joy that had once been there but now was gone. Sally stopped smiling, and it was getting harder for her to get out of bed. One Saturday morning, Sally’s daughter Louise came over to check on her. She brought a few packets of seeds along hoping to lure her mother outside for fresh air. Sally refused though, so Louise gardened alone. She came over each week to talk to her mother and work outside. Planting, raking, and pruning, Louise transformed the yard into a paradise. The seeds planted along three fenced areas grew into living walls. It took persistent persuasion, but finally, Louise’s curiosity got the best of her, and she went outside to see it. She couldn’t believe her eyes! All of Louise’s work was so beautiful.

Explaining Differences to Children

July 29th, 2015 | Old Age |

I am a college student who is studying to become an elementary school teacher. However, I suffer from hearing loss and wear hearing aids Stockport to help me hear better. As a part of my teacher preparation program, I have to go into local elementary school classrooms and read to students. The young children always stare at the devices and have lots of questions about why I wear them, how they help me, if they hurt, or if I like wearing them.

This has opened the door for me to have many frank discussion with the students about how all people are different. I tell them I need them to help me hear just like some of them wear glasses to help them see. We have even read books about kids who have differences. I think this makes kids more tolerant and accepting of others, and I am glad we can have those discussions.

Proper Use of Cotton Swabs

May 26th, 2015 | Health |

While many non-medical people recommend cotton swabs for the purpose of ear wax removal Manchester, it runs the risk of piercing the ear drum or driving wax further into the ear. Rather than using them to clean out wax, here are two alternative uses for these surprisingly useful items.

  • If you are fond of a certain perfume, spray a few cotton swabs with your scent of choice and store them in a plastic bag. This is economical for your purse’s space and can even help you ration out that scent.
  • Pair a swab with rubbing alcohol and you have the perfect tool for cleaning the parts of a media disc where the laser passes over in order to read data. This method is also commonly used in the cleansing of game cartridges by them over the connector pins that the retro gaming system uses to read the cart.

Moment of Uncertainty

May 19th, 2015 | Hobbies |

The time was five to midnight. I sat at the table, looking out at the waterfront and feeling absolutely miserable. I had spent the last month dreaming about this very moment, picturing in my head every possibility. But I had never pictured this. My tea was mostly finished, the condensation running down the glass and making a puddle on the wood. I looked down at my watch. Exactly one minute until midnight. My reflection in the water was shaky with the tumultuous waves. Suddenly, the other diners erupted into a countdown. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. I saw the blurred reflection of the fireworks displays above me. I stood up from the table, shaky.

“Peter?” a voice said behind me.

Turning, I saw her. She was radiating grace and beauty, her eyes sadly sparkling in a silent apology. I went to her and embraced her, joyous as the fireworks above.

How to Build a Backyard Beach

May 12th, 2015 | Gardening |

I’ve always wanted to live on the beach. The sound of the ocean, the scent of sea salt, and the feeling of sand in my toes are some of the greatest pleasures I’ve ever experienced. Unfortunately, my life in mid-west America prevents me from pursuing this dream.

Recently, I got the idea to create a makeshift beach in my backyard. My wife and I agreed that this would be a fun project to do with the kids and a nice luxury to enjoy when we have time to relax. To make my vision a reality, I called the local silica sand suppliers, built a large wooden box to contain the sand, and purchased beach-themed furniture and toys.

When the project was finished, we were very happy with the results. Now we have luau-themed beach parties in the backyard and it’s almost as if our house is just a few feet away from the shore.
